Nice, innit? Pretty. Breathable atmosphere, plenty natural light, interesting and varied terrain, stunning vistas, etc etc. A lovely home.
Well for some of us it is, for the time being anyway. I don't know about anyone else but I for one am not very happy about what's going on down here. It seems to me like various agencies are trying their best to make a pretty big mess of it all, even though I've never met anyone who wants this to happen. Weird.
Who could possibly want to mess up a lovely "des-res" like this, rendering it virtually valueless? And why? Well, I've been doing a fair bit of research into this, and am slowly untangling the tangled web. The picture that emerges is, quite frankly, shocking.
This site merely links to all the sites that I have been to in order to find out what I have found out, I list them here so you can see for yourselves, and draw your own conclusions. Then there is a long list of sites you can use to prevent the situation from getting any worse, and hopefully to start to improve things. In future I will add some interesting odds and ends I have come across which do not seem to appear elsewhere on the internet.
In order to understand what is going on, and some history behind it all, I suggest first of all watching this.
Scary huh? When you've seen that, then this doesn't seem as far-fetched as it could be...
...and if you needed any further proof as to the mechanisms which are used to bring this situation about then I'd recommend watching this, it's in several parts. If you live in US or Canada you can buy the DVD here.
As for the harm this is all causing, well, this lays out the facts quite clearly, and draws some startling conclusions.
And you could go to the cinema and watch these films too: Taking Liberties and War On Democracy
Well, now you know what's going on (I think the evidence at this point is or should be overwhelming) and you're finding it all rather depressing.
Until you realise that it is within our power to change all of this, and the ONE thing we need to do this is UNITY. Each and every one of us has to wake up to the true nature of our reality, one in which mass action or even just mass thought actually affects the very fabric of reality itself.
Not sure about that? Well, for the evidence of this, which is piling up all the time, read this: The Field (although I'd suggest buying books from your local, independent bookshop, of course) a truly amazing read, based on solid science throughout, and thoroughly referenced.
And once you've read that, this teaches us that all our worldly problems are rooted in one place - our own minds. Using the information in this book each and every one of us can rise above the hurt and pain and anger and come to a place of tranquility, where we can act calmly and powerfully, and quietly and gently pull the carpet from under their feet, without them even noticing. Although no one's saying it's easy mind you :-)
So now, armed only with your spirit and your conscience, you need to take action - EASY! There follows a list of all the websites I have found so far which enable us to make a difference. By subscribing to their email lists and signing their petitions, you will be making your voice heard, and if all of us do it - the din will become a roar which will be enough to topple the sturdiest of the bastions of power that are causing the destruction all around us.
Using the links below you can take action - switch to green power, switch to an ethical bank, buy locally produced food, find out which products are made by companies which support political regimes or manufacture their goods in sweat shops, and add your name to the thousands speaking out against injustice and the power of the corporations. It's very easy not to bother. Now it's also easy to bother. Do you really have a reason not to any more? Is your conscience clear? Be a part of the solution, not part of the problem. Your children, and theirs, will thank you.
| The heavyweights: | ||
| Avaaz | These people are heroes, their petitions got rid of Wolfowitz from the World Bank and put climate change at the top of the G8 agenda. Let's get their petitions into the millions, and then billions, not "just" hundreds of thousands. | |
| Write To Them | This is a great website where all you do is enter your postcode and a message and they'll fax your MP for you - free! Why would you do that? Well, let's not forget that most of our MPs are ordinary people like us, most of them driven in to politics by a desire to change life for the better. Those that are not motivated by power and greed are usually happy to hear from us, their constituents, and are often exasperated by the apathy and complacency of the public. Why should they damage their political career and vote against their party unless they've received thousands of faxes telling them how we, the people that they represent, want them to vote - we need to give them the excuse to do the right thing, regardless of party line, and usher in a new age of real democracy. | |
| 10 Downing Street Petitions | This is where you can tell the PM what you want and then get everyone behind you. All I'd say is please research your facts thoroughly first before starting a petition, as if too many petitions are lodged against issues which do not actually exist, it will water down its effectiveness. Still it's great to see the office of the PM pro-actively finding out what people's concerns are. Check back regularly to see what's getting people's backs up at the moment. | |
| Climate Care | Offset your carbon emissions. | |
| Corporate Watch | Don't just watch them - actively ignore them! If you're still going to Sainsbury's or Tesco for your weekly shop - read on... | |
| New Economics Foundation | Excellent site and body of work - a think tank of economists and activists who are tackling the world's problems at the root - our economic system. | |
| Corporate Europe | The EU. Need I say more? "...the lack of a truly European public debate make Brussels into a paradise for corporate lobbyists". Great. | |
| Current Campaigns: | ||
| Lights Out London | 21st June 2007 - turn off all your lights at 9pm for 1 hour (you could be very cool and turn off the master circuit-breaker) and send a message to the power companies and those who still naively insist that global warming "is just a natural cycle". I would say to the government too, but apparently the Houses of Parliament will be turning off as well! | |
| Stop The War Coalition | One million killed in Iraq, over four million Iraqis – one in seven of the population – now refugees and 151 British soldiers killed. There are 2 petitions to sign on this site, one to pull out now and one to oppose military confrontation with Iran. | |
| No 2 ID | How would you like to be a number on a database, rather than a person? How would you like it if every time you sign up for a service or buy a product, the company providing it asks you for your national ID number? How would you like it if you were then refused insurance because you bought too much Jack Daniels last year? I am a Database Administrator - can you be certain I won't sell your details to a terrorist to pay off my debts? Even the government admits ID cards won't stop terrorism and the police have remained tight-lipped about any crime-reduction benefits - so why are ID cards being brought in then? Not for the benefit of you or me, it seems. Donate to remain free(ish). | |
| HACAN ClearSkies | I know - let's increase air traffic as much as possible so we can all get around quicker and cheaper. And sod the environmental damage and the hearing damage for the people living underneath the flightpath. Der. | |
| The Old-Timers: | ||
| Greenpeace | They're giving away free train tickets at airports! | |
| Friends of the Earth | Good advice on local action you can take right now. Sign up for Corporate Action emails. | |
| Amnesty | It's just despotic regimes that imprison people without charge and torture them isn't it? But America does it - is the US a despotic regime then? Erm, yes, and the UK sends people to Guantanamo too... | |
| The Green Party | "No way dude - I'm an anarchist!" Hmmm, well, "anarchist" you may be, but you live in a capitalist "democracy" and you may as well accept it coz it ain't gonna change any time soon. If, however, you'd like to live in a more inclusive, decentralised and sustainable capitalist "democracy", then you'd better start voting, and, even better, send a loud, clear message to the encumbent behemoth parties and join the GP. Anyway they're nice :) | |
| The co-operative group | Co-operatives are the antidote to shareholder-owned businesses. They first one was started in in 1844 in Rochdale, UK and recently this group, one of the largest groups of co-ops, won the Queen's Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. Again. Banking with them ensures your money is only invested ethical ways, and if you join the co-op, you get cash back when you use their services and buy their products - profit sharing. Makes a Nectar card look a bit crap really doesn't it? Also by joining you can have your say in how the businesses in the group are run - one member - one vote, regardless of the amount you've invested. | |
| The (not be ignored) Others: | ||
| The Petition Site | Mainly non-UK issues but hey, everything's going global, including campaigning. | |
| My Society | Fledgling offshoot from Write To Them which aims to "give people simple, tangible benefits in the civic and community aspects of their lives" - and needs volunteers! | |
| Green TV | Bored of Big Brother? Tired of talent shows? Sick of soaps? Well it's about time! Now wise up and watch some useful, informative and advert-free TV on the web. And dump the Sky box before your brain melts. | |
| The website of the magazine, Ethiscore is like Which? but, as the name suggests, ranks products according to the amount of good or bad karma you'll get from using them ;) and is therefore very useful. | ||
| Etheco | Ethical Shopping - use this site to switch to a green, ethical energy supplier or find eco-products. | |
| Freecycle | On-line swap-shop for free, unwanted items. Re-use, rather than re-cycling - so even more energy efficient - but I guess FreeUse would have had the wrong connotations! | |
| London 21 | Remember Agenda 21? Well it's still well and truly alive and more relevant than ever. If you live in London this is a must. Free text alert for green events in London. | |
| Friction TV | Like YouTube but for tub-thumping videos. Hilarious, interesting and useful. Have your say the internet way. | |
| New Consumer Magazine / Newconsumer TV | "The Hottest Ethical Lifestyle Magazine", surely that should be "coolest", heat being a bit of a problem nowadays? TV site seems to be closely related to Green TV but what the hell, it's still better than Big Brother. | |
| Anti-Apathy | Bit like this site really, but flashier. | |
| Growing Communities | So hopefully you're not buying anything from the major supermarkets any more, but instead are now buying lovely locally grown organic stuff from these guys (an example to us all) instead. If you live in Hackney, that is... | |
| ...or from one of these places if you don't. | ||
| Eat The Seasons | ...and if you're wondering why there's no beetroot this month, this explains it all. If it's in the supermarkets and not on this website, it's probably been flown half way round the world so it can be on your plate. Don't buy it. | |
| CorpWatch | The US version of Corporate Watch - check out what Uncle Sam's been up to. | |
| The CarbonNeutral Company | Information for businesses on how to become carbon neutral. | |
| The Ecologist Magazine | Stuff you really do need to know about, and fantastic links. | |
| Ode Magazine | Excellent quality reportage on important issues - always with a very positive and upbeat outlook. Refreshing. | |
| Money Saving Expert | Dubbed "Consumer Revenge" this is an ad-free site which has all the info on how to reclaim illegal bank (and other) charges, and hundreds of ways to stop more of your money going into corporate profits. The bulletin boards are full of insider info from company employees spilling the beans on the sharp practices of their employers, enabling us fellow consumers to avoid them. | |
| Pages with their own lists of links: | ||
| The Corporation Links Page | Wow what a list - The links page of the film, a lot of US-specific sites but a lot of useful stuff and what's not is quite amusing anyway. | |
| Ecotopia | Loads of links to everything from green energy and ethical banking to "utopian dating" - the imagination runs wild! Well worth a visit. Nicer colour scheme than this site too ;) | |
| Art, "anarchy" and off-the-wall: | ||
| Aluna | The world's first tidal-powered moon-clock. Imagine a huge majestic structure of concentric glass rings, gently glowing and encircling a sacred space for contemplation and relaxation. In fact don't imagine it - click on the link - this has to be seen to be believed! Please help make it a reality, and bring tidal power back to London. | |
| Random Artists | Get some real culture - underground art in underground venues across UK. | |
| Urban 75 | All that is good, great, tasty, naughty, stupid and weird. The bulletin boards are where it's at. Heated, informed debate and occasional downright lunacy on every subject under the sun. Also myriad social opportunities and info on the real London underground. |
When using these links I would of course, always advise using one's discretion. A fair amount of misinformation is spread via the internet by the less well-informed, the paranoid, the confused and the just plain mouse-click happy. Generally the only hoaxes are spread via email now, which is why I never forward any. By signing up to email alerts from the websites above you will be asked to sign numerous petitions on various subjects. It's still best to research them and check the facts. If nothing else you will be better informed about the subject - all the information you'll need is a Google / Yahoo / Altavista / Ask search away. You may not have time to do this often, but if you do it's time well spent.
Having said that no single one of these sites provides the answer. There is now a complicated geo-political situation fixed in place via our global economics. A situation that can only be changed through those same economics. So if we each utilise all of the resources above to completely change our lifestyle and spending habits, the global political situation will simply have to change - as the corporate profits and therefore party donations diminish - or else it would collapse. As soon as we are all buying locally, working locally, producing locally, the dominance of the giant corporations with their pyramid management power-structures and compartmentalised approach to purchasing and resourcing will end, paving the way for network-oriented commerce and locally owned and managed trading-groups which will ensure that the communty is put ahead of profits for a very few. The results will include lower crime, higher quality of life, and, eventually, lower prices for higher quality goods.
Also my apologies to Non -Londoners / non-UK residents that many of these links are London or UK-relevant, but, well, there are a lot of us here, after all :) More non-London and non-UK content coming and required.
